EUGENE BLAKE and GEORGE R. SANDERS Blake has inscribed and signed a 10x8 photo of himself signing a guest book for radio/TV host George Sanders, who is watching over Blake's shoulder. Accompanied by a Typed Letter to Blake (1970) signed by Sanders, and bearing Blake's signed handwritten reply. Two items: 1) Photograph inscribed and signed: "For George Sanders Jr./Eugene Carson Blake". B/w 10x8. Photo shows Reverend Blake signing a guest book, as interview host George Sanders looks on. Lightly creased at right corners - not visible head-on. Otherwise, fine condition. 2) Typed Letter signed: "George R. Sanders, Jr.", 1 page, 7Â¼x10Â½. Portland, Oregon, 1970 April 7. On letterhead of KWJJ Broadcasting Co., George R. Sanders, General Manager, to Reverend Eugene C. Blake, New Canaan, Connecticut. In full: "Would you be so kind as to autograph the enclosed picture and return it to me. I would greatly appreciate your doing so. Thank you for your time and efforts. Sincerely". Blake has responded in an ANS at bottom of page: "Best wishes/ECB". Red pencil mark at upper right margin. Ink smudge at lower edge. Otherwise, fine condition. EUGENE CARSON BLAKE (1906-1985), a Presbyterian minister, was President of the National Council of Churches (1954-1957) and General Secretary of the World Council of Churches (1966-1974). He was a leader of the ecumenical movement. Reverend Blake also boasted that he was "the first white clergyman to be arrested in the civil rights movement." GEORGE R. SANDERS, originally a disc jockey, became a prominent radio/TV interview host, first in Los Angeles and later - as shown here - in Portland. He collected autographs from his guests.
